Staro Zhelezare Street Art Fest is a unique tourist attraction – a huge work of art covering the entire village of Staro Zhelezare. This is the only street art village made in this style not only in Bulgaria, but also in Europe. The Street Art project in Staro Zhelezare was created, among other things, to save the village from dying by creating an interesting attraction for the tourists who regularly visit the village. It is located in a popular tourist area next to Hisarya, Starosel. Visitors who come to use the mineral pools, those who taste wines and ride horses in Hisarya, must also visit the village. All drawings are the work of a team of Polish and Bulgarian artists, students of Bulgarian – Polish couple Katarzyna and Ventsialav Piriankov. The murals mainly depict people – portraits of residents and invited persons from all over the world. Every year in summer, the painting continues, the festival has been held since 2015.
The drawings also touch on a current theme – every year a new theme appears. Each drawing has a cognitive and educational character. Each mural is a provocation for reflection on the meaning of life, values, existence, current events. The aim of the festival is, through the use of absurdity, to cause distancing from populist ideas and propaganda.
Also unique is the so-called MoMA Street – where the greatest works of avant-garde art from the MoMA museum in New York are painted. Staro Zhelezare is a village that has become an extraordinary place, where every visitor will find many inspiring stories, many inspirations for reflection. The place guarantees a great adventure during at least a two-hour walk, during which you probably won’t be able to find all the picture anyway.
